Form Factor Is Everything for WiFi Performance

Apple TV 4K (3rd Gen): Best WiFi

  • WiFi Spec: WiFi 6 (2x2 MIMO)
  • Average throughput at 20ft: 810 Mbps

Sits beside the TV, not behind it. Its antennas are not blocked by the TV chassis. Handles high-bitrate 4K Dolby Vision streams without a single dropped frame. Best choice for demanding streaming setups.

Roku Ultra: Excellent Runner-Up

  • WiFi Spec: WiFi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Average throughput at 20ft: 540 Mbps

Breaking from the stick form factor allows larger antennas. Stable 5GHz performance under load. Excellent choice for most households at a lower price than Apple TV.

Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max: Crippled by Design

  • WiFi Spec: WiFi 6E (the newest standard)
  • Average throughput at 20ft: 310 Mbps

Despite advertising the newest WiFi standard, being plugged directly behind a large steel-backplated OLED TV creates a partial Faraday cage effect. The metal blocks signal and results in the worst real-world performance of the three.

The Fix for Stick Form-Factor Devices

Always use the HDMI extender cable included in the box to bend the stick away from the TV's metal chassis. This alone can improve WiFi speed by 40–60% on affected devices by exposing the antenna to the open air.
